The Arden School of Theatre have commissioned playwright Cathy Crabb (BEAUTIFUL HOUSE, MOVING PICTURES and SOMETHING RIGHT) to write a new play to address the lack of strong roles for women in the profession.
Working closely with the students of The Arden, Cathy has penned a new play to showcase the final year actors that will soon be entering into the profession. Cathy Crabb is an award-winning playwright who has written extensively for the stage, including the plays ‘Beautiful House’, ‘Moving Pictures’, ‘Something Right’ and ‘Beyond the 4th Wall’. Her critically acclaimed play ‘The Bubbler’ toured in 2014 and ‘Dreamers’, a musical co-written with Lindsay Williams and music by Carol Donaldson, premiered at Oldham Coliseum in 2015. She recently wrote another musical, ‘Meat Pie, Sausage Roll’ which debuted in March 2017.
The play, titled ‘The Beer Walk’ will centre around Cathy’s hometown Saddleworth and one of its most famous annual social events. Now scrapped, but still living on ‘unofficially’, The real beer walk features thousands of locals walking over 11 miles to pick up a can of beer at ten points along the way. The play will focus on several stories that intertwine throughout The Beer Walk, tackling some of the serious issues that the members of its community faces as well as some of the laughs they experience as they make their way through the famous beer-fuelled day.
Whilst in development, the students attended writing workshops with the author to help develop the material and the characters they created are central to the stories and plot. Directed by Martha Simon, it is currently being developed and rehearsed and is due to be performed at Z-Arts Theatre, Thursday-Saturday 18th-20th May and tickets can be purchased via the box office at www.z-arts.org/events/the-beer-walk/
